Bunyip is a picturesque little town at the foothills of the Dandenongs and is the gate-way to the Bunyip State Park.
The town of Bunyip which is situated in Cardinia Shire is located 77km's south-east of Melbourne along the Gippsland railway line. The town is located 2km's off the Princes Highway and is roughly half way between the larger towns of Pakenham and Warragul.
The town is set on a gentle rolling hill, views from Main street look out onto the Swamp with green pastures and nature shrub lands, Westernport Bay can even be seen on a fine day. The shopping area remains relatively untouched and reflects a by-gone era with two historic pubs and original shops in-between some of which still close for lunch.
At last count Bunyip had a population of 2,159 people in 2006 as quoted by the Cardinia Shire. Today Bunyip is a dormitory town with most residents travelling to other areas and major centres for work with the decline of forestry and farming.
Take a drive around the town or district and have a look at the names of roads and streets, these are a recognition of the early families that made a decision to settle in the area many years ago.
Bunyip has all the facilities of a rural town including a resident doctor, vet, aged care facility, fire brigade, police station, shops, schools, sporting facilities, two pubs, take-away outlets, churches, banks and a mobile library service.
